Not Making The Grade
Nebraska ranked 49th out of 50 states in providing eligible kids with school breakfast according to a new national analysis released this week by the Food Research and Action Center’s (FRAC) School Breakfast Scorecard, an annual report that analyzes each state’s participation in the free School Breakfast Program. According to the Scorecard, only 40.8 percent of Nebraska students who participate in the free and reduced-price lunch program also participated in the school breakfast program. The new Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) allows eligible schools in districts with a high percentage of low-income families to receive funding to pay for free, healthy meals for all students regardless of the income of the students’ families. The Reader Remembers Billene Nemec
Billene Nemec, pioneer of the buy fresh, buy local movement in Nebraska, passed away last Thursday. Known fondly as Mama Market, Billene was known as much for her warm smile as she was for her tireless work to promote family farms. Omaha is grateful for her countless contribution to the community and she will be deeply missed.
