— Millard Public Schools will feature a fresh pick of the month offering products from regional producers: Daniels Produce, Garden Fresh Vegetables, Phil Scavo Farms, Stanberry Produce, Deardorf Sweet Corn and Capitol City Fruit.

— Omaha Public Schools is adding Mi Mama’s Tortillas, which are produced in Omaha. Much of the grain in the whole-wheat tortillas are grown locally.  OPS is also adding a logo to help identify local foods and producers in promotional materials and menus. In the first two months of the school year OPS students will enjoy locally produced watermelon, zucchini, butternut squash, Athenia cantaloupe, cucumbers and corn on the cob. Tammy Yarmon, director of Nutrition Services for OPS, hopes to diversify apples on the OPS menu and eventually add locally sourced ground beef or bison.

— Westside Community Schools is taking local to a new level. They hosted a kick-off event at Westside on Aug. 9 with the goal of educating staff on the importance of eating fresh, local foods. (Diazepam) In October or early November Nutrition Services and Access 66 will host a Food Evolution event where parents and students will learn about fresh, local foods and meet vendors. WCS is serving a variety of locally sourced products including hamburger from Little Red Barn Beef, just outside Bennington, Neb.
