Invasion Down Under

The overwhelming support that Omaha has shown in the wake of the explosion and fire in the Old Market this weekend has created a warmth that the weekend’s subzero temperatures couldn’t freeze. M’s, Market House, Niche, Nouvelle Eve, and Omaha Habitat, in addition to the 14 apartments above the pub were all substantial to total losses. Several nearby establishments incurred massive ice and flooding. It will still be days before the extent of the damage is known, but in the meantime, dozens of area businesses have joined forces to show support.

Friday, Jan. 29 at 7pm, M’s staff will guest bartend at The Sydney for “M’s Pub Bar Takeover, Silent Auction, and Krazyoke”  Anyone with items to donate to the silent auction is asked to contact thesydneybenson@gmail.com

The Next Step

While we all wait on pins and needles to learn what’s next for M’s owners Ann Mellen and Ron Samuelson, a glimmering spot on the horizon appears. Over Easy and Market House darling Nick Bartholomew announces a new venue in progress. The former home of “Beer and Loathing” on 50th and Underwood in Dundee will soon house a new Bartholomew venture. Stay tuned to The Reader for opening dates!

Love Thy Neighbor

Salt 88 (john@salt88.com), Jams (Greg Cutchall), Krug Park (See Anne Hepburn or Alex Lund on site), Liquid Sunshine Taproom (b.miller@omahadrafthouse.com) and Stokes Bar and Grill (https://www.facebook.com/StokesOldMarket/?fref=ts), have all extended job offers to displaced employees. The Tavern’s David Kerr was quick to start a YouCaring account (https://www.youcaring.com/servers-in-the-old-market-500610) to help support those who lost their jobs, as well as to pledge a percentage of tips to M’s and Market House staff. Kristin Fitzgerald started a GoFundMe account to specifically aid M’s workers, ensuring that every dollar raised will be given directly to Ron Samuelson to distribute.
