On Thursday, March 19 at 6:30 pm, you’re going to want your mommy. Sorry, I keep screwing these things up. I meant to say, you’re going to watch Mommy, the winner of the Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize. Film Streams will be hosting a special screening that day, which will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Howard Lieu, the Director of Faculty Development Programs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The insanely well-received film follows a spirited single mother trying to raise her 15-year-old son who has ADHD. I’m not saying I can relate to that son but…hey, look, is that a fish?!
Marion Cotillard has agreed to join Michael Fassbender in the big-screen adaptation of the video game “Assassin’s Creed.” Dangling a Fassbender and tempting me with a Cotillard almost worked to get me excited, until I remembered Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper in Mario Brothers. #NeverForget
Before Guardians of the Galaxy, I would treat news of wrestler David Bautista being cast in something as an ill portent. But seeing as how dude murdered it as Drax and then got cast in the next Bond movie, I’m rather encouraged by news that that pile of man muscle is going to play The Kurgan in the upcoming Highlander reboot. To me, Highlander is one of those movies that I have no problem being remade, in that the concept was cool and nostalgia has convinced us the movie was good, but it did star Christopher Lambert, winner of the “human being with least charisma and/or star power” award every single year he’s been alive.
A few weeks back, writer/director Neill Blomkamp released some concept images from a never-made entry into the Alien series, which would have returned Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn. If you haven’t seen them, I don’t want to overhype them. So I’ll just say that they’re the coolest pieces of art in all of history. Fans were instantly bummed that we would not be getting this Blomkamp take on the franchise. Well, it may not be “game over, man” as Blomkamp says the movie isn’t all-the-way dead.
