I hate the month of August. From the way it loves to turn armpits into Amazonian rainforests to the way it stands between me and football returning the next month, I hate it like Omaha’s new mayor hates transparency. Thankfully, Film Streams knows this. So they’re all “let’s plan a couple of awesome events so Ryan can watch cool stuff inside where there’s air conditioning and distract himself from the proximity to future pigskin action.” You get me, Film Streams. And I like that.
- First up is a one-time screening of Between Us, which between us, is something you are going to want to check out. Showing at 7 pm on Thursday, August 1, the film was partially shot in Omaha and features Julie Stiles and Taye Diggs as a married couple visiting old friends. Director Dan Mirvish will be doing a Q&A after the screening, so you can ask things like “Is Taye Diggs as dreamy in real life?” or “Can I touch Julia Stiles?” If we’re lucky, the answer is yes to both.
- Next, Film Streams and Joslyn Art Museum are buddying up for two screenings of art-related films, both of which will have a post-show discussion led by Dr. Juliette Parnell, who is an expert in French stuff. On Tuesday, August 20 at 7 pm, you can catch Renior, which is unsurprisingly about the artist Renior. The second screening is Tuesday, August 27 at 7 pm, and will feature Seraphine, which is equally unsurprisingly about Seraphine Louis. For more information, hit up filmstreams.org. While you’re there, see if you can’t drop someone a line at the best art theater in the midwest and let them know how much we appreciate them reducing August’s craptitude by an estimated 37%.
