* Local DJ Dollar Bill Burton will once again host a trio of events celebrating the life and work of pioneering producer and hip-hop artist J Dilla. Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey, died Feb. 10, 2006, just three days after his 32nd birthday. Dad's Beer 'n' Donuts on Tuesday, February 5th at Duffy's Tavern, 1412 O St. in Lincoln, will feature Dollar Bill and DJ Stryke will provide a comprehensive overview of Dilla's career. The J Dilla Tribute show on Friday, February 8 at House of Loom, 1012 South 10th St., will feature live performances from Midtown Marauders, Op2mus, Dirty Diamonds, and Scky Rei, alongside DJs Dollar Bill and Nater Smith. DillaSoul is the third event on Wednesday, February 13 also takes place at House of Loom. Dollar Bill and DJ Stryke present an installment of Dollar Bill's monthly Sweet Soul Music night, focusing on Dilla's work with Erykah Badu, Dwele, Janet Jackson, D'Angelo and others. Expect a heavy rotation of the jazz, funk, and soul that J Dilla used to build his patented sound. All of the events will feature free donuts, a nod to Dilla's 2006 album Donuts.
* Morrissey has once again postponed his show at Lincoln's Rococo Theatre, 140 North 13th St. The show, originally scheduled for November, was pushed back to Wednesday, February 6th. That date has been scratched now too. This time, the enigmatic leader of 80s band the Smiths fell ill with a bleeding ulcer and had to cancel two week's worth of shows, including the Lincoln date. The show will be re-scheduled, according to an email the Rococo sent out to ticket holders. All tickets will be honored for the to-be-announced new date.
* Act fast if you want to download the entire Shanks catalogue for free. The grimy band of garage punk miscreants, who disbanded a few years ago, have offered up their entire recorded output via bandcamp. The unprintable url is roughly, f**ktheshanks.bandcamp.com. Be creative and you can figure out what letteres belong where the asterisks are located. The 26 song release will be $7 after this limited time offer expires so act now.
* Speaking of unprintable, Omaha's own The F**king Party are preparing a boozy, blowout bash to celebrate their new record's release. The show will be Friday, February 15th at the art gallery/burgeoning DIY show space Sweatshop Gallery, 2727 North 62nd St. The band recorded at ARC Studios in Omaha with Ben Brodin. The LP, with hand-screened covers, will be $5 at the show. Admission to the show, featuring openers Baby Tears and Dark Satellites, is also $5. The band will also be buying a keg of beer for the festivities, so expect them to be in great spirit for this one. For a preview of the album, check out the Youtube.com video for the band's song "Craig Woke Up", directed by Tyler Chickinelli, Dom and Craig Fort and co-produced by beer, apparently. Flamingo drinkin', y'all.
