Cutting Room for May 25

  • If Hollywood gets to start the summer movie season in April, I think it’s fair that the Aksarben Cinema (aksarbencinema.com) gets to celebrate Halloween whenever they want. On the last Saturday of every month from now until the start of the apocalyptic year 2012, the theater and Dr. San Guinary are teaming up for “Creature Feature Live!” The show starts at 9:30 pm and features a horror movie interspersed with live Dr. San Guinary cut-ins in the style of the cult-hit TV show. Tickets are already available for this month’s flick (held on May 28), Night of the Living Dead. All this at a theater that will legally booze you up. Boo-yeah! Get it? “Boo” yeah?

  • A brief follow-up to last week’s proclamation that D-Box seats, chairs that weeble-wobble to simulate on-screen action, were added to the Rave Theater at Westroads (ravemotionpictures.com). Having now tried one for myself, I can tell you that it neither made me turn into Pukey Smurf nor did it distract me from the movie. That could be because the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean 4: The Last Milk of the Cash Cow, wasn’t something you really had to think about. While the price is a steep 20 bucks, it is a rather unique experience that’s worth checking out at least once, provided you don’t use theater visits as naptimes.

  • Darren Aronofsky is being courted. Badassdigest.com reports that Disney wants him to take over Maleficent, the “Wicked”-esque take on Sleeping Beauty that Tim Burton recently abandoned, while Warner Brothers wants him on the biblical epic Moses, which is sure to be followed by a sequel called Moses Supposes. Neither sound like Aronofsky’s style, but combine the two and you may have something…
