Just as North Omaha is more than social services and gun violence, its history is larger than the late 1960s civil disturbances. There’s a rich story there of a regional live music hub where legends played. Of thriving small businesses, ethnic enclaves, civil rights actions, grassroots activism. Of professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, athletic greats. Of churches, parks, neighborhoods, homes, families. University of Nebraska-Lincoln history professor Patrick Jones is asking folks to bring African-American history artifacts (letters, photos, documents, heirlooms) to be appraised for their historical value and digitized for inclusion in a Web-based public archive. The project is a collaborative between UNL, Loves Jazz & Arts Center, Great Plains Black History Museum, Malcolm X Memorial Foundation and Nebraska Educational Television, which will film this History Harvest.
