bare: NAKED TRUTH
Artists Cooperative Gallery, 405 S. 11th St.
Closing reception 6-9pm; exhibit runs thru Sept. 30
For the last year, artists Travis Apel, Lori Elliott-Barlte and Dar Vande Voort have been creating work on the theme of the nude figure. The result, bare: NAKED TRUTH, is atypical for the gallery that usual exhibits concurrent solo exhibitions. Via his steel sculpture, Apel used the figure as metaphor, each piece taking on deep psychological intent on universal human themes. Elliott-Bartle explored themes of loss, grief, fear, intimacy and joy with her figurative oil paintings; and her own vulnerability with a series of self-portraits. Vande Voort, known for her paintings using puzzle pieces for texture, approached the figure surrealistically, placing nudes in dreamlike atmospheres. Visit thereader.com for an in-depth review of this exhibit that also includes new pieces created by other Cooperative member artists related to the nude theme.
