Said the Whale's latest song "I Love You", an effervescently catchy single, is just starting to break Vancouver indie pop-rockers to a larger audience. The songs success even has local station 89.7 FM the River on board, as they are sponsoring this show. Said the Whale has built a steady following on its two previous albums, but their forthcoming album, hawaii, is the first release since the band started heavily touring in the United States. This is winning guitar pop, traveling the same ground as fellow Canadians Tokyo Police Club, but Said the Whale seem to have embraced a far greater variety to decorate its sound. The band can combine spiky post-punk guitar and pair them with a tropical bent that's half calypso, half Talking Heads. Other moments may call to mind acts like the Shins or even Young the Giant. There's a chameleon nature to Said the Whale's songs, but the common denominator is their keen eye for what makes a pop song work.
