Following an experimental calendar, Kaneko will open its doors to the public with Community, a series of exhibitions starting October and closing November in conjunction with its annual fundraiser, Soirée Season. Selected artists come from Jun Kaneko’s creative inner circle, like the internationally-recognized glass artist Therman Statom, Mexico City-based studio assistant Juan Sanchez and area artists Watie White and Pamela Conyers-Hinson.
The first series of openings features Statom, White and Conyers-Hinson, with three special previews throughout October; all requiring booking free reservations in advanced. And following physical distancing guidelines, masks are required to enter the building.
White is the first artist to be highlighted, with two previews on October 2nd and 3rd. Known for his figurative woodcuts, Kaneko will have four of the largest panels White has ever carved, as well as a series of large prints from 100 People, a public art project that started in 2017. This two-evening event will be timed in half-hour increments and will be restricted to 20 people at a time.
Later in the month, Conyers-Hinson has her preview of her sculpture which explores cultural diversity, gender and social issues on the weekend of October 10th, and Statom will have his on the weekend of October 24th. More information for these previews can be found on Kaneko’s website.
The exhibition will end after an installation of Juan Sanchez’s artwork, and the display of the Tessellation public art project. The Tessellation Project launched earlier this year as a response to the shock of the Coronavirus pandemic. The project accepted 8×8” digital image submissions from around the world.
The overall event, Community opens to the public on October 29, and remains so until March, 2021. Kaneko, located on 1111 Jones Street, Omaha Nebraska, requires booking free reservations in advanced and a mask in order to enter the building.
