The Union for Contemporary Art opens the exhibition Secret Places, featuring work by Adele Hauser, with a reception on Friday, March 27, from 6-9 p.m. The exhibition at its Wanda D. Ewing Gallery, 2221 N. 24th Street, continues through April 11.
The fabric collage paintings of Hauser, from Austin, Texas, are featured in this solo exhibition. She is a mixed media artist whose work combines portraiture and quilting, drawing and painting.
This exhibition represents a special opportunity: a very private person, Hauser seldom shares her art with the larger public. The show itself provides a consideration of the nature of emotional attachment that artists may have with their creations and the vulnerability inherent in sharing such personal work with a larger audience.
Hauser’s pieced and sewn wall hangings depict narrative scenes from daily life, intimately felt, such as moments spent cuddling with a beloved pet. “The words you whisper in your dog’s ear,” the artist says, “are the secrets that we don’t even know are secrets at all.”
This show was organized by the Union to extend the conversation begun last month by the Kaneko regarding the vibrancy and variety of work being made by artists using fabric and fiber in distinctive ways.
