- When the British-slang-infused, alien invasion gem Attack the Block slams onto video in a week or so and finally ascends to its rightful place on the throne of recent cult classics, I won’t say “I told you so.” I’ll say, “I told you so, bruvva.” Now comes word that director Joe Cornish may not be done delivering urban sci-fi comedy goodness. Speaking at the New York Comic Convention, Cornish confirmed that he’s been approached to do a sequel, TV spin-off or an American remake. While it’s a double huzzah for those first two options, the last one is a big uh-oh, as the British-ness of the film is part of what made it wicked awesome. American changes to British source materials don’t always work. I mean, have you seen congress?
- Nearly 15 years later, and I still love me some Starship Troopers. The bug-killing, military culture-skewering film is goofy goodness, even if the direct-to-DVD sequels and CGI animated series that followed were downright vile. The good news is that acclaimed anime director Shinji Aramaki is making a new full-length animated film that seeks to return the series to its original glory. Chances are it will forgo the complex satirical tone of the original film in favor of epic space action. Hey, so long as bugs get “killed good,” I want to know more!
- When Thor 2 finally rolls into production, the god of thunder will bow down to a woman. That’s right, Patty Jenkins (Monster) will direct the sequel, meaning it’s entirely possible that the main female lead won’t feel like useless bait dangled to make Thor drool. It seems weird that having a talented lady direct an action-oriented superhero film may be considered progress, but it honestly kind of is.
