The Gift of Hope

With the holiday fast approaching, several area pantries have held food drives, hosted drop centers, and taken part in galas and benefits to stay ahead of the growing need in Omaha. One such pantry, Heartland Hope Ministries, finds itself far short of the expected need with only days to make up the deficit. The organization expects approximately 5,400 hungry Nebraskans this year, up 43% from last year. Heartland Hope helps bridge the gap for people struggling after illness or job loss, people whose families often have to choose between keeping the heat on or keeping food on the table. If you would like to donate, you can do so from the comfort of your own home at http://heartland.greenlad.com/?page_id=39, or head down to the center.

Jam it All

While you know what you will be doing for one meal this Thursday, have you considered what you’ll do for dinner? Jams will be opening a second location on Thanksgiving at 1101 Harney. The new establishment will be serving from 4pm to 10pm with proceeds going to an as-yet-undetermined charity. Save the cleanup for tomorrow and enjoy The Holiday Lights Festival from the location of the former Rock Bottom.

The Big Con

ConAgra Foods has officially announced the decision to move headquarters to Chicago, resulting in the loss of 1,500 Omaha jobs. Analysts believe this move is a harbinger of things to come for all processed food companies, as more Nebraska families make healthier choices and move toward natural ingredients. With millions of dollars in subsidies now freed up by the shift, where would you like to see the investments go? Email Sara Locke at Crumbs@TheReader.Com and you could see your comments in an upcoming edition of The Reader!
