Food Focus: Sunday Brunch

Food Focus: Sunday Brunch

Brunch is about as close to a perfect meal as a meal can get. It’s particularly nice when you don’t wake up early enough for a hearty breakfast, yet still want the option of morning foods while you have lunch. Or maybe you just like having three meals before dinner. Either way, brunch is amazing.

So I wasn’t surprised that when I asked a bunch of people about their favorite brunch spots in the Omaha area, there were plenty of emphatic responses. Apparently everyone loves brunch, and everyone is convinced that they know the best place to go. My response, of course, is to just try all of these places and see which one you like the best.

Grandmother’s

Of all the responses I heard about the best brunch place in Omaha, Grandmother’s was the most often repeated answer. The Sunday brunch is served from 9:00AM – 2:00PM and consists of a buffet of just about any brunch food you would expect. Made-to-order omelets, waffles, cinnamon rolls and bacon sit right alongside fried chicken, chicken fingers and green bean casserole. There’s also dessert.

“You can have scrambled eggs and a side of mashed potatoes!” exclaims Beth Tiedemann. “The fruit is fresh and everything is homemade.” She also mentions that the peanut butter pie is delicious.

Annette Beaumont agrees. “We like Grandmother’s because drinks are included and our kids eat for free.”

McFoster’s Natural Kind Café

Felina Lune Kavi swears by the Sunday brunch at McFoster’s. “It’s the atmosphere,” she says. “It’s also having more healthy choices than unhealthy choices.”

Available on Sundays from 10:00AM to 3:00PM, this restaurant boasts some of the healthiest options for brunch. If you’re looking for some organic tofu in your omelet or if you want some vegan hash browns, McFoster’s is the place to go.

There is more to this brunch than just tofu and vegan fare, though. Try the McFoster’s Benedict or the B.L.T. to really give your taste buds a treat.

Dario’s Brasserie

When I asked Trisha Araujo what she liked most about the brunch at Dario’s, her response was brief yet poignant. “Um. Belgian beer. Enough said.”

Sunday brunch is available at Dario’s from 10:00AM – 2:00PM. You’re not going to find a mishmash buffet of food and you probably won’t arrive armed with a “kids eat free” coupon, but you will enjoy an elegant menu. Try the Belgian Pommes Frites, any of the crepes, or a quiche if you want the best of what they have to offer.

The drink menu is extensive and impressive. Plan to spend some time savoring your food if this is your brunch destination.

Table Grace Cafe

I paused before adding Table Grace Café to this list since I just recently profiled them for an article, but as one Facebook user pointed out, I did a good job of talking about their business model but didn’t really delve into describing their food. So here goes.

Brunch is offered Saturdays from 11:00AM – 2:00PM. The menu varies since Table Grace Café relies largely on donations, but the latest brunch featured a couple of different quiches, veggie burritos, chocolate chip waffles and cinnamon rolls. Everything is ridiculously tasty and, as always, there is no set menu price when dining here. You decide what to donate.

Of course, I suggest you decide to donate a bunch, but I’ll leave that up to you.

If you’re heading to brunch on a particularly busy eating-out day (like Mother’s Day for instance; really, doesn’t mom deserve a day off from cooking?) you might want to call ahead and see if you can make reservations. And if you’re heading to a buffet-style brunch, remember that it’s generally considered bad form to take all the bacon or to sneeze all over the food.
