Cutting Room for April 5

  • No need to hoist a lighter or cell phone, Film Streams (filmstreams.org) is already planning an encore. Every single ticket was claimed for the recent free screening of Girl Rising, a documentary about nine girls from different developing nations that features the voices of Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep, Salma Hayek, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez and Cate Blanchett. Because they love you, Film Streams has set up another showing on April 23 at 7 pm. Okay, so this one isn’t free, as regular admission rates apply, but who wouldn’t leap at the chance to shell out some meager moolah for a flick like this?
  • When I said I wanted Tim Burton to either do something different or go away, I didn’t know he’d take Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz with him! Big Eyes will tell the story of painter Margaret Keane and her husband Walter, the duo who produced those completely disturbing big-eyed kid pictures that were popular back when my mind was a fertile ground for growing nightmares. While the script right now is supposedly a character sketch, I wouldn’t put it past Timmy B to emo-fantasy it all up somehow. Also, I assume Johnny Depp is going to play a weird, messy-haired paint brush.
  • A quick somber goodbye to Jane Nebel Henson, who passed away at age 78. She was not only Jim Henson’s wife but a key player in creating the world of the Muppets and running various charities. Jim may get most of the credit, but Jane definitely (ahem) had a hand in The Muppets too, and she’ll be missed.
  • The sequel to Finding Nemo is now officially Finding Dory, which looks better on a marquee than Albert Brooks Sadly Whores Himself. I look forward to the spiritual conclusion of this trilogy with Pixar’s Finding Dignity.
