- We pretend it’s some big chore, but in the time that it would take someone in a city like Chicago to commute home, you can zip to Lincoln from Omaha. I recommend you do that on Wednesday Aug 7 around 5-ish. That way, you can catch both the 5:30 screening of Hey Bartender, a documentary about the world of mixology, at The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center (theross.org) and the 7 pm cocktail and gourmet hors d’oeuvres party. You read that right; it’s a movie screening and then local bartenders showcase signature drinks. Fancy booze and a cool documentary? Say hello to my little friend, I-80.
- Enough. Really, I mean that. I’ve had enough of the Sharknado schtick. I endured it when my Twitterfeed filled up with hipster humor. I survived it when the made-for-SyFy Channel movie actually did respectable ratings. But my mother asked me about Sharknado last week and now Regal Cinemas is going to run it at midnight in 200 theaters on August 2. No. Bad. Bad public. Not only will this result in a billion even worse, even more calculated –to-be-wacky crap films like this, but it takes attention and space away from movies that deserve it. I can’t go see the latest Nicholas Winding Refn movie on the big screen but I can see effing Sharknado? Stop. Just stop it right now.
- Latino Review (latino-review.com) has done it again. The site known for blockbuster scoops has revealed that Zac Efron and Ryan Gosling have auditioned for Star Wars Episode VII. Specifically, they say Gosling was up for Luke’s son and Efron was up for the Solos’ kid. “I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror.” Efron as Han’s kid? I mean, at least I buy Gosling as Luke’s offspring; if you’ve heard his high-pitched, girly scream, it perfectly mirrors Mark Hamill’s perma-whine from Episode IV.
