• As far as nicknames go, I suppose there are worse than “franchise Viagra.” Having spiked the grosses in Fast and Furious’s series and the GI Joe sequel, The Rock has become the “box office little blue pill.” And apparently, a robot may be next to “feel the rise,” as Dwayne Johnson is circling Terminator 5, joining him with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Let’s be honest, let’s hope they don’t come to blows on set because The Rock has become a boulder and if he punched the former Governator, the latter may become a pile of dust and bad decisions.
  • Because the Internet is a hateful, sexist place far too often, when the lovely and (more importantly) talented Shailene Woodley was announced as Mary Jane Watson in the sequel to Amazing Spider-Man, misogynists cried “she’s too ugly.” So many faceless opinions, so few opportunities to punch their faces… Now comes word Mary Jane has been bumped from the second film to the third, which is fine…but that means Woodley can’t keep the job due to other commitments. It’s hard not to see this as a reaction to the vile, objectifying backlash. Hooray for terrible people!
  • Before I tell you this and you get all ruffled (or whatever potato chip adjective you desire), remember that nobody actually has to give money to a Kickstarter Project just because someone started one. I remind you of that because you’re going to want to kick Kickstarter in the keister when you hear that James Franco, he of Oz the Great and Powerful and other hundred-million-dollar blockbusters, started a crowdfunding account aiming to get $500,000 to make a trilogy of short films based on his Palo Alto short story collection. Yes, he’s giving any profits to charity. Yes, he’s giving four young directors a chance to get a break. No, a super-rich mega-actor should not hijack a site dedicated to the little guy and walk around with his hand upturned, begging for spare change. Plus, you know they’re gonna suck, right?
