- Once I asked an ex-girlfriend if she liked Fellini and she said she preferred ravioli. If she’s out there reading this, I recommend highly that she check out Amarcod, director Federico Fellini’s 1973 Academy Award-winning flick, at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater (filmstreams.org) on May 17 at 7 p.m. The film is a joint presentation with the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and will be followed by a discussion with Bemis Center artists-in-residence Letha Wilson, Leslie Shows, Isabelle Hayeur, Nicholas Ward and architect Pete Goché. The talk will be moderated by Hesse McGraw, Chief Curator for the Bemis Center. If Mr. McGraw should be so unfortunate as to include my ex-gal in this discussion, I apologize in advance for her pasta-related inquiries.
- Quentin Tarantino’s next flick, Django Unchained, will be what he calls “a southern.” Now don’t let the shift in cardinal direction fool you; this is really just QT’s take on spaghetti westerns, which is more than enough to get my six-shooter pointed skyward. Set in the 1800s, the film will focus on Django, a freed slave who is training to be a bounty hunter and seeking revenge against wicked slave masters. Rumor has it that the offer to play Django is in the hands of none other than Will Smith. If the formerly jiggy-wit-it, non-cursing hip-hopper can set aside his PG-13-rated legacy long enough to buddy up with Tarantino, a noted blood-spilling enthusiast, I predict Smith’s first Oscar win. Remember, you read it here first. But only remember it if I’m right.
