Downtown Omaha gears up for Record Store Day


* English indie pop band Scars on 45 will make a special in-store appearance at Homer’s Music, 1210 Howard St., Saturday, April 21st at 3 p.m. to help celebrate the fifth annual Record Store Day. The band just released their self-titled debut on Atlantic Records, after building a few years of buzz with songs being placed on television shows, including single “Heart on Fire” which was used on Grey’s Anatomy.  In addition to the live performance, Homer’s will have be one of three downtown retailers offering up a selection of the hundreds of exclusive titles made available to brick-and-mortar music retailers on Saturday. Drastic Plastic, 1209 Howard St., and Antiquarium Records, 417 South 13th St., will also be participating. All three stores will keep their normal hours, with Homer’s opening at 10 a.m.,  Drastic opening at 11 a.m. and Antiquarium opening at noon. 

* Local hard rocker Big Al is still doing it the only way he knows how — completely free. Al Hatfield is putting on his fifth annual Big Al’s Free Music Festival, running Tuesday, April 24th to Saturday, April 28th at the Hideout, 320 South 72nd St. Each night of the festival will include a local music swap meet, where local bands are invited to sell, swap or even give away band merchandise. The event, which includes no cover bands, will feature original music from Garfan, King Kliff, John Klemmensen & the Party, Black on High. Scru Face Jean, Brad Hoshaw, Bloodcow and two performances by the Big Al Band.

* Local music video crew Love Drunk Studio is set to take its act back out on the road, but first the group will host two fundraiser concerts before they leave. The first show will take Sunday, April 29th at Duffy’s Tavern, 1412 O St. in Lincoln, headlined by Philadelphia’s Arrah & the Ferns. Denver’s Flashbulb Fires and Omaha’s Millions of Boys are also set to perform. The second fundraiser will be Thursday, May 3rd at the Sydney, 5918 Maple St. in Omaha, featuring a performance by Honeybee & Hers. While on the tour from May 4th to 20th, the group will shoot their one-take music performance videos with a host of out-of-town bands.
