Morrissey sets new date for Lincoln show

* Local band Travelling Mercies are trying to raise $4000 on the crowd-funding website Kickstarter to help pay for their second album, Motel. The album follows a story of life in a Southern border town motel. The band is billing the fundraising project as a way to pre-order the forthcoming album. Among the items offered for those who back the project is a Bible owned by songwriter Jeremy Holan. The deadline for the fundraising campaign is Sunday, March 24th. The band has already passed a quarter of its $4000 goal.

* Here’s hoping the third time is a charm. Lincoln’s Rococo Theatre, 140 North 13th St., has rescheduled the twice-postponed Morrissey concert for Tuesday, March 19th. The English singer, who was the frontman of the Smiths, originally planned to play Lincoln in November 2012. A family emergency and then Morrissey’s own health issues led to that date and a subsequent rescheduled date in February to be scratched. All tickets to the original performance date are being honored for the new date.

* Matt Whipkey is embarking on a concept album inspired by some of Omaha’s most famous amusement parks. The album is currently in the recording stages, but features contributions from the Whipkey Three. The double album also sees Whipkey working by himself in a wholly new way — programming songs at home by himself. One early song features programmed drums, clean guitars and just a little bit of synth, taking Whipkey’s rock ‘n roll to a sound that’s half-bedroom pop, half Cars-style new wave. Whipkey says he plans on releasing the album on vinyl, with the tentative title, Penny Park : Omaha, NE : Summer 1989.

* Be sure to check out the Women Who Rock: Vision, Power, Passion exhibit at the Durham Museum, 801 South 10th St. The exhibit, organized by Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, will be in town through Sunday, May 5th. The exhibit highlighted the history of women in music and their influence on the development of rock music across several decades.
