Today we have stories about ORBT busses remaining fare free until summer, Gov. Pete Ricketts opposing new gun-control laws, and a California variant of COVID-19 discovered in central Nebraska.
Around Omaha
- Two Nebraska health care companies agree to settle with the state attorney general’s office on charges of misleading advertising, marketing, distribution and sales of COVID-19 antibody testing, in violation of consumer protection statutes.
- Several pharmacies in Omaha will start carrying COVID-19 vaccines, as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program.
- Omaha Metro Transit announces new ORBT bus line will remain fare free into the summer, when upgrades to the payment system are planned, including ticket machines at ORBT stations and a mobile app payment option.
- Community health centers in Omaha and Council Bluffs will receive $19.1 million from the American Rescue Plan, with the funds going toward COVID-19 vaccinations, testing and treatment for vulnerable populations.
- Metro Community College’s vaccine clinic at its Fort Omaha campus will be a drive-thru operation, but residents are concerned that 400 shots per day won’t meet the demand of North Omaha.
- City Councilmember Colleen Brennan faces six challengers in the primary for the District 5 seat, in one of the city’s most-crowded races.

- Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts criticizes President Joe Biden’s calls for new gun-control laws,saying that banning guns won’t solve “the underlying problems that have resulted in these tragedies.”
- Nebraska lawmakers advance a bill that would prohibit ethanol plants from using chemically treated corn to make their products. The bill is aimed at the AltEn ethanol plantin Mead that is under scrutiny for repeated environmental violations.
- A California variant of COVID-19 called B.1.429 is discovered in central Nebraska. Health experts say the strain spreads more easily, but vaccines are effective against it. (Klonopin)
