The best combo is a large pepperoni pie and today’s news: Omaha is projected to get a huge economic boost from the College World Series, the planned concert venue in downtown Omaha gets a name, and the Food Bank of Lincoln breaks ground on a new facility.

Around Omaha

  • Ernie Goss, a Creighton economics professor, projects that Omaha will get an $88.3 million boost from the College World Series operating at full capacity.
  • Mayor Jean Stothert and the Omaha Police Department pay tribute to Officer Kerrie Orozco, who died in the line of duty six years ago on May 20, just hours before she was scheduled to go on maternity leave.
  • The planned $103 million concert venue for downtown Omaha gets a name: Steelhouse Omaha. Ground is broken on the venue, and it’s set to open in mid-2023.
  • UNMC selects a team of developers, including Denver’s Koelbel and Co. and Omaha’s GreenSlate Development, to lead the $45 million renovation and redevelopment of the former Omaha Steel Works property on the west side of Saddle Creek Road. The team was selected through competitive bidding. 
  • After guidance from the NCAA allowed the College World Series to operate at full capacity, Douglas County health officials say that neither masks nor proof of vaccination will be required to attend games at TD Ameritrade Park.

  • The Food Bank of Lincoln breaks ground on a $10 million, 60,000-square-foot building that will increase access to healthy food and shorten food lines. The space will triple refrigeration capacity from the current location and provide more room for volunteers with safer work areas.
  • Nebraska lawmakers approve a bill that would implement provisions of a constitutional gaming amendment approved by voters last year. The bill also prohibits betting on Nebraska college teams when they are playing in the state.
  • The search for Ryan Larsen, a missing 11-year-old boy with autism, enters its fifth day, as officials start searching nearby bodies of water. Police say the child has a history of hiding from his family and authorities.
