Everyone has mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day, but thankfully, it doesn’t always have to be cliché. Omaha has an array of unique, sexy options for those who maybe don’t adhere to the traditional flowers and box of chocolates routine. If you’re wanting to get a little more creative and cool, we have the perfect solutions.

For truly unique mixed drinks and a fabulous selection of wines, the Boiler Room in the Old Market is a great option for a date night or evening out with friends. Located on 11th and Jones streets, this unique spot is known for its diverse, ever-changing menu. It’s an ideal spot for special occasions, and a date night is no exception. The desserts and drink menu are to die for, with a delectable favorite the Chocolate Custard. With vanilla mousse, cherry compote and praline, and chocolate crumble, this is the perfect decadent sweet treat.

Another fantastic option just around the corner is the new occupiers of the former French Café space, Le Bouillon. They take reservations, so act early and get a spot for their fabulous French fare. But it’s all about the drinks and desserts on Valentine’s Day, so save some room for the divine macarons, or perhaps the Chocolate Pot de Crème. Try these paired with the sweet Picon Punch, with grenadine, cognac and sparkling wine. There’s no such thing as too much chocolate or sweets on Valentine’s Day.

For the chocolate lover in your life, you can never go wrong with chocolate-covered strawberries. The best in town? Undoubtedly, the chocolate-dipped strawberries from Delice at Midtown Crossing are always a favorite. The European bakery specializes in the most savory pastries, especially this Valentine’s Day cornerstone. Get a few of them, or a box of these sweet treats for your Valentine.

Also in midtown, as well as a location in the Old Market, you’ll find cupcakes galore at Bliss Bakery.  Show your holiday spirit with a variety of White Buttercream, Red Velvet, and the sinfully delicious Pink Champagne. You can get a dozen for $35 or a mini dozen for $20 for your sweet-toothed sweetheart.

If you want something a little naughtier, we recommend Lover Luxuries in Benson for the ultimate romantic evening to remember. Featuring ultra-glamorous lingerie such as the Sheer Pleasure 2 Piece Chemise (available in black or red, if you feel festive) and the Midnight Glamour 2 Piece Slip (mesh bra with removable garters and thong), you’re ready to celebrate after a memorable date night. If lingerie isn’t quite your jam, don’t worry – they also have massage oils and fun, sexy games to keep things interesting. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and always willing to help out.

Contrary to popular belief, Valentine’s Day is not just for couples. In fact, it’s proof that sometimes it’s more fun for single ladies, thanks to events like Galentine’s Day at Hello Holiday. Sarah Lorsung Tvrdik and Megan Hunt have organized this special event that will take place in their new Dundee storefront on Friday, February 13th. The party will celebrate both the holiday as well as their exclusive, new collection with illustrator Tuesday Bassen. There will be door prizes given out as well.

So, you’ve decided to either go out with friends, celebrate with the ladies, or go on a fun Valentine’s Day date…now what to wear? We’ve asked a few of our favorite local boutiques for advice on outfits and selections from their inventory. The ladies at Hello Holiday have beautifully curated dresses, skirts, and tops for stylish, smart women who aren’t afraid to embrace their femininity. Some of their favorite pieces include the Starlight Dress (worn here with the Marvel Heels, $). This dress is available in store and online for $114.99 and mixes vintage with modern, appealing to a variety of personal styles. It can take you from a cute café or bar to an upscale eatery, depending on where you decide to spend the evening.

For a pop of color and a mix of textures, try the bold Ruby Woo Skirt ($52.99 online and in store) worn with the Velvet Wonderground Top ($39.99 online and in store). The best part about Hello Holiday’s pieces are the wear you can get out of them. They go from day to night seamlessly and can be worn in a variety of ways, so you won’t have to worry about a special piece sitting in the closet.

If you already have the perfect outfit and just need a special accessory to take it over the edge, we absolutely love Hello Holiday’s “Lovers” and “Haters” headbands, $24 available online and in the store. They’re perfect with a sleek updo or fantastic on short hairstyles as well, dressed up or cute and casual.  The ladies at Hello Holiday love this cheeky piece and have even been seen sporting it on their Instagram page.

Guys and girls on a budget don’t need to worry about the perfect ensemble, because right across the street from Hello Holiday is Scout Dry Goods and Trade, specializing in a combination of new, vintage and lightly loved items. Here, you can find a head to toe look with Dr. Marten shoes, vintage heels and accessories made by local artists. Mix and match, and don’t afraid to be creative with the bevy of clothing items they offer. The Scout crew is more than willing to help you find a perfect look for your evening out.

While the planning, execution, and very idea of Valentine’s Day can be stressful, it doesn’t have to be, nor does it have to be commercial and silly. Use it as an opportunity to take advantage of the great locally-owned shops and restaurants right in your neighborhood. Grab your date (or better yet, grab your friends), and go have some well-deserved fun.
