– This weekend is your last chance to get a look at Omaha playwright Daena Schweiger’s Voices from the Closet, presented by SNAP Productions. The play was originally scheduled as a replacement show in 2012 when an opening in the season suddenly came up. Then it got more time to develop into the production audiences see today. Schweiger talks about the development process and working with 4 different directors on the show.
“It was a lot more hands off than you would think,” she said. “Initially when the four of us sat down in 2012 to discuss the show the topics involved included the ‘heaviness’ of the pieces – they wanted a couple of pieces that were lighter in nature so it wouldn’t be so heavy handed.”
“One piece was written with that in mind, one piece I had already written became more of a comic piece due to the direction of it and the actor portraying the character, and that worked out really well.”
Schweiger said she really enjoyed watching the work the performers have put into the show.
“We all got together not long after the show was cast for a read thru of the monologues and I knew at that point that we had 8 very strong actors,” she said. “It’s always fun watching an actor grow into a role, whether it be an original work or one that is well known. Three weeks into the run the actors have received feedback from audience members after the show, feedback due to audience reaction during the show itself, and the feedback from the audience has been so positive it validates the work they’ve put into the show. It has really settled into a nice flow.”
Voices from the Closet runs through this weekend at SNAP Production on 33rd and California St. For more information, visit www.snapproductions.com.
