COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA
3225 California Ave.
William Inge’s often admired 1950 play comes back into the light as SNAP Productions seeks to make it shine. The impetus: the curse and refuge of alcoholism lying within the sorrowful, unfulfilled lives of middle-aged, Middle-Americans Doc and Lola. More than drink stirs this intense examination. It zeroes in on their dysfunctional marriage where unrequited sexual stirrings smolder and where Lola never ceases to need the unconditional love of her disappeared dog Sheba. The presence of that pet could have warmed their claustrophobic home. In the small confines of this theater you may be so close that you need to resist the urge to reach out and comfort them.
