In our second Omaha Fashion Week designer preview, we sat down with local designer Emma Erickson to get the exclusive details on her latest collection.
Tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind your fall/winter 2012 collection.
My latest collection is full of really wearable pieces made from fabrics like jersey, bamboo and organic cotton. I’ve been working with musician Laura Burhenn (The Mynabirds) and the pieces I’m designing for her are really the center point, the inspiration for this collection. I’m inspired by her project, The New Revolutionists and the idea of a warrior woman who is still very feminine; a powerful, quirky woman who is confident and living her life the way she wants to live it.
How does this collection differ from your previous collections?
This collection is more daywear focused. The pieces I’ve designed are definitely more casual, but can easily be dressed up with the right accessories. Manufacturing is a time consuming process so I focused on designing pieces that are realistic to produce in my studio.
This time around I collaborated with designer Chris Hughes of Artifact Bag Co. who created belts for my models to wear. Also, Liz Hunt made custom mineral eye shadows for my models that complement the shades used in my collection. My hair and makeup team will be led by Rebecca Forsyth and Sarah Zito of BUNGALOW/8 Hairdressing.
What other projects are you working on right now?
I’m in the process of designing pieces for Laura Burhenn to wear on tour. I designed a romper with flowing sleeves and a deep “V” in the back – I’m still working on that with her. I’m most excited about that right now.
