“From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters, this land was made for you and me…” Lyrics by Woodie Guthrie preceded Omaha artist Kjell Erik Peterson’s exhibit opening this weekend at Bemis Underground.  The San Francisco-bred artist similarly examines concepts of identity, place and human interconnectedness by going inside the landscape himself.  Last month, Peterson, currently of Omaha and working for Jun Kaneko, took his self-made canoe into the Missouri River. This is among the experiences he’ll share with the Redwood Forests exhibit via ceramic and installation work, drawings, photographs and the canoe itself. He will give a talk Saturday July 16, also discussing his plan to continue the series with meals, performances, intra-city navigation and sweat lodges. The Underground show will be up through August 13. -Sally Deskins
