Cold Cave w/ Austra, Touch People

There’s a sense of anonymity, of hiding, when it comes to Cold Cave. The album covers don’t feature principal member Wes Eisold. Instead there’s a picture of a woman on each. Inside, the starkness is present, but on the latest album, 2011’s Cherish the Light Years, it’s backed by a widescreen palette of towering synth-led sonics. It’s noisy, huge, gothy, moody, dramatic stuff.

The Reader: There’s a big difference in the scope of sound on the latest Cold Cave album Cherish the Light Years compared with the first one, Love Comes Close. What brought about the evolution?

Wes Eisold: A few things – Studio and producer budgets, not wanting to bury everything in effects or reverb or distortion, not wanting to be a part of what got really trendy, lazy, really fast – the lo-fi of the Internet 2000s.

TR: Prior to Cold Cave, you wrote lyrics for other people’s music. How much of a challenge was it for you when you began writing both music and lyrics?

WE: It can be difficult because I need the music to be nearly fully completed before writing. So in a studio situation where time is limited to money and the song is almost always unfinished, I don’t get to write until the very end. Everything on Cherish was written in the studio after the songs were completed. I knew what they were going to be about but didn’t know how I’d explain them yet.

TR: Where do you draw inspiration from when you’re writing songs?

WE: Love in very beautiful and pitiful way.
