The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts announced the launch of Michael Jones McKean’s The Rainbow: Certain Principles of Light and Shapes Between Forms, a series of twice-daily summer visual events where a rainbow created using sunlight, renewable energy and captured rainwater, will appear. Tours, art talks and an exhibition catalogue will accompany the work which has been in progress by the former Bemis artist-in-residence since 2002. Bemiscenter.org.
May 12, three blocks of historic Vinton Street will be closed for the “Universally Human” youth activity festival featuring organizations that offer opportunities to share their talents. The Creative Institute will offer free art classes, Kent Bellows Studio will exhibit art, creative writing opportunities will be available as well as other activities. The event is co-sponsored by Deer Park Neighborhood Association and Habitat for Humanity.
The Florence Mill ArtLoft and Bone Creek Museum are exhibiting agrarian-themed art. May 12, 2:30, Amanda Mobley Guenther, Curator of Bone Creek Museum, will discuss the exhibit and Nebraska’s “newest art medium.” Both exhibits close May 31. Bonecreek.org.
In the evening May 12 at Kent Bellows Studio, the Friends of Art of the UNO Department of Art and Art History present An Evening of Art. Art by students, faculty, local and national artists will be for sale to benefit the organization that provides art scholarships and funding for special projects. Art by Littleton Alston (print), Harriet Otis (drawing), Barbara Simcoe (photograph) and more will be pre-priced and pre-purchased in priority group sales. Tickets $20 at the door.
Caroline Ouellette, sixth-grader at Millard’s Russell Middle School, was selected among 114,000 entries as Nebraska’s winner in the Doodle 4 Google art contest. Her design will be displayed at the school, Joslyn Art Museum and the New York City Public Library. The ultimate winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship, and the school will be given $50,000 in technology. Voters determine the winner.
