Former Bemis Center Artist in Residence Suzan Shutan (now of Connecticut) and Omaha-based artist Susan Knight, known for her intricate woven installation work, used scientific data on the precipitation in Nebraska for the past 40 years (which replenishes groundwater) to create their maze-like, environmental installation constructed from re-purposed, recyclable and natural materials to create the Watered Down exhibit at Norfolk Arts Center opening May 31.
Poet Heather Sticka will debut her Dirty Haiku Project June 1 at Jake’s Cigar and Spirits in Lincoln. The Tsumi musician writes erotic haiku on friends’ and volunteers’ bodies who are then photographed by Rob Liliedahl to create sensual images combining word and the human form. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Fresh Start Homes.
Choice Custom Framing and Gallery in Benson will celebrate its official opening June 1 showcasing the drawings of William Dorfler. Dorfler, a “naive artist” from Denison, IA, will display a series called “Out of the Ordinary” of “whirlygig plans, pin-ups, and barnyard animals.”
At Bancroft Street Market opening Friday, Untitled June Art Show, will feature multi-media art by artists Mike Scheef, Lynn Batten, Tom Swanson, Derek Courtney, Tom McLaughlin, Jason Heida, Lalaya Lalley, Timothy Siragusa, Amy Haney, and Sara Graf. Show organizer Scheef will debut his new artist book/zine EMZ 3 exclusively at the exhibit. This is the sixth annual group show organized by these artists. Three of the previous exhibits have been nominated for Best Group Exhibit at the Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards.
Chalco art patron Rodney Rahl opens up his private green space for the public to enjoy for a Garden Art Sale June 3 featuring art by Wendy Jane Bantam to benefit her newly formed art scholarship. Bantam, currently exhibiting at Modern Arts Midwest in Lincoln, is selling cartoons, comic books, drawings, t-shirts, prints and original paintings dating back to 1993 in this sale she titled Everything Must Go. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Bantam’s newly established Artist Opportunity Award scholarship for Lincoln art students nominated by their professors. The sale takes place June 3, 11a.m.-2p.m. at 8522 S. 162nd St. in Omaha.
