Five years ago, the Midwest Lampworker’s Guild wanted to help out one of their members who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, by combining their artistic talents with a charitable event to benefit cancer awareness. Member and mixed media artist Kelli Sweet posed the idea of Art in the Bag, a silent auction of purses and totes created by local artisans paired with a beaded key chain featuring lampworked glass beads. This year, the Guild is supporting Omahan Robyn Wells’ Girl Scout Project, Beads of Courage, an arts in medicine program for Children’s Hospital, where children fighting serious illness earn beads for their bravery. Those interested can sponsor a bead to be given to a child through the program at the event or throughout October as part of the Guild’s All Member Show at Hot Shops.
