Dr. John w/ the Blind Boys of Alabama

The Bourbon Theatre, 1415 O St. in Lincoln

7 p.m., tickets range from $38 to $65, bourbontheatre.com

New Orleans organist Dr. John is in the midst of a resurgence, thanks to a new album produced by Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. Locked Down collides Dr. John’s world of funk, Afrobeat and otherworldly New Orleans sounds with Auerbach’s heavy blues-rock sound. Dr. John’s comeback as focused attention on the musician’s storied career, which began as a sideman and session musician in the 1950s. Dr. John’s own solo career took off thanks to the danceable groove of his biggest hit, “Right Place, Wrong Time”, while his solo albums were marinated in spiritual elements derived from voodoo and magic cultures prominent in southern Louisiana. Dr. John will be joined by the Blind Boys of Alabama as they play through a selection of songs together, in a show aptly called “Spirituals to Funk.”
