Psychedelic Furs w/ The Technicolors, Pharmacy Spirits

The Bourbon Theatre, 1415 O St.

8 p.m., $25 in advance/$30 day-of-show, bourbontheatre.com

The Psychedelic Furs were the sophisticates of the British post-punk scene and would end up being the understated cool kids once post-punk snowballed into the richly-hued new wave era. The Furs’ best songs still ring as deeply familiar, even to those who know little beyond “Love My Way”, “Heartbreak Beat”, and “Pretty in Pink”, which inspired the John Hughes’ film of the same night. Richard Butler’s voice is the anchor of the band’s moodiest pieces. The band’s knack for writing tastefully, austere art rock melded with new wave, synth pop and other 80s styles positioned the Furs as heir apparent to Roxy Music. Fashionably hip and drenched in a sense of set-apart cool, the Furs managed to avoid any of the excesses of 80s pop success. The band dissolved in the early 90s, but reformed again in 2000. The band continues to regularly tour.
