Pavement is a band that probably should have never broken up, however, had they not; lead singer Stephen Malkmus never would have started his current project, The Jicks. Pavement spearheaded the “alternative” rock movement in the 90’s and uh, paved, the way for other like-minded artists. His no-where-near perfect voice was iconic during that era and not much has changed. After a short-lived Pavement reunion in 2010, Malkmus decided to return with the Jicks to release their new album, Mirror Traffic. Rumored to be their most energetic effort to date, Mirror Traffic is not a complete return to Pavement glory, but it feels close. There is no doubt that Pavement fans will find the album equally as enticing and worthy of throwing on their iPods. Any resemblance to earlier days is likely unintentional, but for the aging “hipsters” of the world, even an accidental flashback is a pleasant contact high.

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks with Nurses, February 17, at Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St, 9 p.m. Tickets are $15/ADV & $18/DOS. Visit www.onepercentproductions.com for more information.
