Youth Lagoon’s Trevor Powers crafted his first album, The Year Of Hibernation, in near seclusion, using songwriting as a method of filtering through his thoughts and psychological distress. There was no expectation that anybody but a few around his hometown of Boise, Idaho would hear his songs. However the internet brought those songs of ambient keyboard lines and delicate vocals to Fat Possum Records, which signed Youth Lagoon and put the album in wide circulation. For 2013’s follow-up Wondrous Bughouse, Powers once again retreated into his own head, exploring the links between one’s spiritual and physical self. These songs expanded the intimate, simple structures of his first album, so he worked with Animal Collective producer Ben H. Allen to bring these richer psychedelic indie pop pieces to life. What resulted is one of 2013’s best releases, that eschewed the easy accessibility of The Year of Hibernation without losing the emotional core in his songwriting.
