Cass McCombs has become mysterious only for not explicitly seeking publicize himself. Instead, he’s mostly left his songs to spread the word. To that end, he offered two distinct, but related albums in 2011. The quickly-recorded Humor Risk takes on McCombs usual effortless mixing of assorted genres including folk, Brit-pop and ’60s rock, while Wit’s End, which developed during the course of several years, stays within a laidback post-Van Morrison vibe. Recording for both albums were done simultaneously and both only contain eight songs. Together and alone, they both serve as worthy follow-ups to McCombs 2009 breakthrough Catacombs.
