Salsa, samba and so much more. Founded by Cuban-born dancer and choreographer Eduardo Vilardo, Chicago-based Luna Negra’s mission is to provide a platform for Latino choreographers to share their work.

Luna Negra’s award-winning artistic director Gustavo Ramirez Sansano said Luna Negra is dedicated to helping both famous and new Latino choreographers become what they want to be by giving them the appropriate ingredients to choreograph contemporary Latino dance pieces that steer away from stereotypes.

The three pieces on the Omaha program are “Bate,” “Naked Ape” and Sansano’s own “Flabbergast.” He wrote the piece in 2001 and has reset it several times since then.

“It’s kind of a tribute to dance and to the movies of the ‘50s and ‘60s and especially to my mom, who taught me “El Baion” which is one of the songs I use in the piece.”
