In a recent history of exurbent, punchy British rock bands, the Wombats jumped forth in the near immediate wake of acts like the Kaiser Chiefs, the Kooks and the Arctic Monkeys with their own spirited guitar pop. The band bears the sort of Blur and the Jam signifiers that seem ingrained in Brit-pop’s DNA, but there’s an almost exhiliratingly directness in the band’s tongue-in-cheek pop nuggets. The Liverpool band’s excellent 2007 debut, A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation, was highlighted by the energetic, witty “Let’s Dance To Joy Division” and “Moving To New York”. Last year’s sophomore release This Modern Glitch updated the sound only slightly, adding whistling, whirring synth lines to the upbeat mix, with single “Tokyo – Vampires & Wolves” leading the way.
