Sept. 22 Menomena w/ Suckers and Tu Fawning Waiting Room Lounge, 6212 Maple St. 9 p.m., $12 in advance, onepercentproductions.com For Portland Ore.’s Menomena, it’s not the sound that’s been tagged as cutting edge, but their cut-and-paste approach for making those indie rock sounds. 2007’s Friend & Foe helped catapult the band, as the band’s use of a program designed by multi-instrumentalist member Brent Knopf, called Digital Looping Recorder, was featured in home recording magazine Tape Op. For 2010 follow-up Mines, the program dropped in the background as band members worked from separate computers constructing and deconstructing tracks that they swapped via hard drives and email. Yet, the approach has led to Mines being a layered, cohesive and at times, quite groove-laden indie rock record.
