Investigators believe Mitchel Hadan, 47, shot and killed his girlfriend, then tried to kill himself while the two were stopped inside a vehicle near 72nd and L on Jan. 1. An Omaha police officer approached the vehicle Saturday afternoon to see if the motorist needed assistance. After speaking with Hadan, the officer returned to his cruiser to divert traffic when he heard gunshots from inside the vehicle. Rita Eckhout, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hadan was transported to the Creighton University Medical Center and is expected to survive. The investigation is ongoing.
