Through July 22 Dan Howard: Recent Paintings Anderson O’Brien Fine Art, 1108 Jackson St., FREE_Opening reception June 17, 6-9p.m. 402.884.0911, aobfineart.com A happy birthday indeed; for Dan Howard’s 80th, he’s celebrating in style, showing three exhibitions simultaneously in Omaha and Lincoln including “Recent Paintings” at the Downtown Anderson O’Brien featuring eight of his oil paintings and one watercolor/pen and ink on Bristol board, all produced 2008-11. The retired University of Lincoln professor and University of Iowa alumn began by exhibiting works he had created over the past 20 years at Sheldon Museum of Art, following with recent paintings shown at Kiechel Fine Art in Lincoln. Howard has received over 100 prizes, awards and honors over his 40-plus years career as artist and educator, his work described as a fine-line between abstraction and representational art, large canvases of gestural, swirling images. In his most recent pieces shown at Anderson O’Brien, he re-explores his beginnings, examining the basic art-school concepts of drawing within the practice of painting. Will he continue? “One thing I have learned,” said the artist with work in collections internationally, “is that it’s never over until it’s over, but it has been a wonderful ride so far.”
