A dozen University of Nebraska-Omaha art students at The Hive opens August 31, including live painting demonstrations and music by Optimal Eleven.
September 2 openings in Omaha: Bill Hoover’s new work at Coriander in the lower level of the Old Market Passageway. The artist is known for his fresh and meditative images of abstract worlds in oil and sand. Turning and Returning at the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery, features woodturner Doyle Howitt, painter N. Byram Luth and photographer-sculptor Margie Schimenti. Dundee Gallery presents Karen Schnepf’s bold and vivid mixed medias of acrylics, oil crayons and pencil. The Fred Simon Gallery opens Before the Boneyard: The Encaustic Artwork of Janet Eskridge, exploring “the complex meaning of human existence.”
The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts hosts their monthly art talk September 1, 7 p.m., featuring artists-in-residence Peter Owen (painting), Tim DeVoe (sculpture) and Yinghua Zhu (installations), who is also opening at Peerless Gallery this weekend (see 8-days).
The New BLK will feature video-art with Picture Picture: Nebraska Video Art Now: 1 Night and Done, September 9, including video installations around town the week prior. Tim Guthrie will project downtown from a private residence across from the French Café, featuring silhouettes of figures “doing random things,” said the artist, September 5-9 during evening hours. Guthrie and Jamie Burmeister’s interactive bike installation Cli•mac•ter•ic is up at Creighton’ Lied Art Gallery through the 2nd. Alex Myers installed a projection in Midtown Crossing at Turner Park. Ryan Carroll installed a video in Slowdown. Other featured artists for the BLK show include Brittan Rosendahl, Russ Nordman, Jody Boyer, Scott Blake, Nolan Tredway, Ann Gradwohl, Heidi Bartlett, Bryan Klopping, Andi Olsen, Harrison Martin, Michael Mayer and Gary Day.
The OPPD Refrigerator Artwork was unveiled August 25. Five selected green-themed art projects utilizing recycled refrigerators were placed in the Old Market including “Big Earth, Small World” by Machell Owens at 11th and Jackson; “Time Capsule” by Sarah Rowe at 13th and Jackson; “Under the Pot, A Stand or Not” by Charlene Potter at 12th and Howard; “Let’s Play House” by Paul Konchagulian at 10th and Howard; and “Refrigerarium” by Liz Vercruysse, at 11th and Harney.
