Leslie Shows created much of the work for her solo show in Gallery 2 while a resident at Bemis Center in 2011. Shows starts with digitally scanned images of pyrite to construct mixed media large-scale paintings that are spectral, reflective, and aim to accurately depict their object source, yet engage the alchemical mythology of the material. A second body of work includes a series of cast sulfur everyday objects like remotes, telephones, and toys. With these and a video piece, Odradek, Shows explores “ways culture and human thought are tied to the structure of objects.” At the Underground, artists Alex Borovski (painter) and Lonnie Potter (collage/mixed media) explore perceived value in art and life in Out of In Focus.
