Though medicine was Tess Gerritsen’s first career, writing was her first love. After five years as an internist, Gerritsen left medicine behind for good and began writing.
Her series of novels featuring homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles inspired TNT’s hit show, Rizzoli & Isles. Gerritsen says when Dr. Isles was first introduced within the series she never thought Dr. Isles would be a continuing character.
“Somebody had bid for the right to name a character, so I wrote this walk-on character named Dr. Maura Isles, which was the name that they wanted. And as soon as she walked on I thought, ‘She’s kind of mysterious, I don’t know who she is.’ She is a lot like me from the kind of car she drives to where she went to school. We’re both introverted and we both like to believe in science,” said Gerritsen.
Gerritsen is the guest speaker for Creighton’s annual Women and Health Lecture. She said she will be signing books after her presentation.
