Mary Carrick is that rare vocal artist who swings from cabaret to opera and back again. In this spirit of exploration, she’s performing a one-woman opera by Francis Poulenc in two nontraditional spaces. She and frequent creative collaborator J. Gawf, Opera Omaha music director, along with director James de Basis, have adapted this intense one-act drama into English. “My initial idea for this opera was to make it intimate and immersive for the audience, which is not the norm for opera. It’s going to be very cool and different,” Carrick says. “Being a crossover singer is really very challenging on multiple levels. I’m really a singer who blurs the lines. People often don’t know how to classify me and that’s okay – I really don’t know how to either. I just work on what moves me and what I think will also move people.” She says she’s excited to be singing the role of Elle in “this piece that has become very close to my heart.” Presented by Opera Omaha in conjunction with National Opera Week.
