An Omaha-area nonprofit is raising funds for a veteran-focused permanent supportive housing project near 92nd and Blondo streets.
The $22 million Legacy Grove Senior Veteran Apartments project is part of a broader effort to address veteran homelessness, said Brandy Wallar, CEO of New Visions Homeless Services.
“Every night between Council Bluffs and Lincoln, there’s approximately 120 veterans experiencing homelessness,” Waller said, “and between our two campuses, we have about 80 veterans.”
A majority of New Visions’ current apartments are either non-congregate shelters, where a veteran shares an apartment with another veteran; an emergency shelter; or temporary living, which typically last about two years.
“And so the reality of it: The only way to end homelessness is housing,” Waller said.
In addition to 46 fully furnished housing units, Legacy Grove will include shared spaces and supportive amenities that “encourage connection, wellness, independence and community.” Plans call for a community kitchen, dining room, fitness center, meeting rooms, computer room, medical offices, pantry, outdoor walking trail and outdoor fitness area.
A majority of the units will come with a voucher that dictates the occupant won’t spend more than 30% of their income on housing.
New Visions has raised about 75% of the funding needed for the $22 million development. The group is asking members of the public to help them raise the final 25%.
“We just really want to invite the community to be part of this project,” Waller said. “And a gift at any level will go a long way, whether it’s $100 or it’s a legacy gift. We do have some naming opportunities if you do have a veteran in your family and you would like to name a room after them.”
If the fundraising efforts go as planned, New Visions will break ground on Legacy Grove next year and aims to open in 2028.
