The lines were long and the weather was damp as thousands of Douglas County voters waited at their polling places Tuesday.

When Election Commissioner Danielle Jensen spoke with reporters at 1 p.m., it was much too early to share official numbers. But, she estimated the day would end with turnout at 55% — slightly more than in 2022, which saw 54%.

“We’ll see,” Jensen said. “If it stays steady, I might go higher with my prediction.”

Jensen also called on voters to keep an eye out for scam texts or calls. She’s heard reports from a handful of residents who received a text claiming their ballot has not been accepted by the Douglas County Election Commission.

“We do not send text messages,” Jensen said.

Voters can visit the Nebraska Secretary of State’s website to look up the status of their early ballot.

Polls across Douglas County will remain open until 8 p.m. Any registered voter who is in line by 8 p.m. will be allowed to cast a vote.
