The challenge for Tennis was to follow-up not just a successful debut album, 2011’s Cape Dory, but also to provide a new narrative beyond the tale of wanderlust that sparked the band’s creation. So this year’s Young & Old sees the married duo of singer Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley showing growth beyond the simple songs they penned after ending their half-year-long Eastern seaboard sailboat voyage. They still play simple, 60s-influenced sunshine pop that pairs keyboards and reverby guitar parts, but there’s an added oomph thanks to Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, who produced the disc. Songs like “Petition” point towards a pop band ready to evolve from its cute origin story.
