Terence “Bud” Crawford of Omaha is retiring from boxing, according to posts from his YouTube and X accounts.
Crawford defeated Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 13 to earn an undisputed title in three different weight classes, the most belts in the modern era of boxing.
“Walking away as a great with nothing else left to prove,” Crawford said in a release on Wednesday morning.
The Omaha Bryan High School graduate finishes his career with a 42-0 record, 31 knockouts and one of the most accomplished in the sport’s storied history.
Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. said Crawford has represented Omaha well..
“Bud Crawford made boxing history while wearing his hometown name,” Ewing said in a news release. “Beyond his success in the ring, I have always appreciated Bud’s love for Omaha, his service to youths and the way he brought people together to share in his victories.”
In recent months, Crawford’s name has been in the headlines, for getting one of his title belts taken away for not paying sanctioning fees, and for a traffic stop where Omaha Police officers pointed firearms at him and three passengers during a traffic stop.
Officers say they saw a gun on the driver’s side floorboard, which they say turned out to be legally owned. Crawford has pleaded not guilty to reckless driving. The case is scheduled for a hearing on New Year’s Eve.
